Can you love Jesus and Fashion at the same time?

I consider myself a baby Christian.  I didn't grow up in an overly "Christian" home and while I feel at times a Christian upbringing may have been an easier life, I'm grateful that I was given that freedom to explore what I believed in and was encouraged to take it as far as I wanted to go.  Having said that, when I really started to get deeper in my discovery of who Jesus is and what He means to me, the confusion set in on some of my "worldly" passions.  Fashion was one of them.

There is certainly scripture that can lead us to believe, as women, we should wear potato sacks for clothing and have buns in our never-cut hair. (No disrespect to buns, those things are lifesavers on non hair wash days.)   Paul says in 1 Timothy 2:9-10 “I also want the women to dress modestly, with decency and propriety, adorning themselves, not with elaborate hairstyles or gold or pearls or expensive clothes, but with good deeds, appropriate for women who profess to worship God”.  A couple of important things to note in this scripture.  Paul gives no specifics as to what is "modest or decent".  He simply states they should dress modestly, with decency.  This scripture alone is why many Christian women feel they shouldn't wear makeup, jewellery or trendy clothing.  Let's be clear here.  Drawing a line between modest and immodest is completely subjective and can depend on many aspects, specifically cultural norms. Use your discernment in this area.  If you don't feel what you are wearing is appropriate, there is a good chance it isn't. On the other hand if you are constantly a little fuzzy in the area of "appropriate vs. inappropriate", start praying for discernment.  He will give it to you!

I love to be trendy and on point and to look beautiful.  I feel like God has given me a gift to help other women discover their fashion style and to encourage them to feel beautiful in the skin they are in.  As I start to understand scripture on a deeper level, I believe there is a simple answer to this question.  YESYou can love Jesus and Fashion at the same time.  God didn't have to create the world to be beautiful, but He did.  God didn't have to create us to be unique individuals, but He did.  He created a world full of colour, textures and beauty.  I believe this only truly becomes an issue when your passions become your idols.  Beauty, Fashion, Cars, Money, whatever it is; you need to keep it in perspective.  Fashion to me is simply a reflection of God's creativity in each of us.

Remember, God does not necessarily see your outer beauty; your clothes, your jewellery, your hairstyle or your make up, but I believe that when you take the time to respect and embrace the beauty God has given you and strive to walk in excellence, it makes His heart happy!  So slap on those stilettos and your favourite lipstick.  Oh, and if you are ever unsure on what's trending, check out the fashion section of the blog to get tips and ideas! Have a beauty, fashion, Jesus filled day.
